Resident Evil 7 Review

Resident Evil series hits back with its new edition Biohazard and it is a hit. The game series is admired for its survival horror gameplay and distinctively mutated creatures typically due to some virus. This time "Biohazard" the main title conveys an outbreak not into a city or country but into a family. The game has a mixture of first person shooter, puzzle and gathering array of items to survive. The plot is engaging that keep's the gamer engage till the end. The twist is well planted, forcing the gamer to keep on moving ahead without revealing much in the start.
Resident Evil 7 Review
Boss fights are tough. The developer added two endings in the game changes with a choice of protagonist. He is in dilemma to save his wife or a stranger who helped him in escaping the deadly mansion. Although both leads to the similar climax, but with a small change. We don't want to spoil the fun. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard fulfills the requirement of a horror and shooting game side by side. It does not have chapters. You keep on playing and save the game so that there is no need to begin again.

Plot:

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard happens in Dulvey Louisiana. Ethan, the central character is on a way to find his missing wife Mia and reaches her family house, a popular haunted mansion. The game begins at a slow pace and it is creepy from start. From finding tapes to the searching house and trying to figure out what is really going here is horrifying. You never get used to it. As you keep on playing, you will understand how hard is to get out this mansion which later turns out to be the home of mutated Baker family.
I divide the game into three main stages where first Ethan unaware about Mia, came out just in search but lands into serious trouble. He is abducted, beaten and captivated. Later the second stage when Ethan finally learns what is going on, escaping the house becomes the final mission. But in the third stage when he learns everything about the cause of such incidences he plans to end it.
Different Boss fights are arranged from start to end. Each of them gets tougher with time. I found Ethan weak. He does not have many provisions to carry weapons, the items, and their combination is a pain sometimes. The inventory does not allow you to carry everything, you have to deposit them and move on.
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard's puzzles are tiresome, but also interesting. With good observation, you can easily figure out how to unlock doors or locate objects. I found the ending tougher compare to everything.

Gameplay:

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard controls are simple. If you are playing it on a console a few set of buttons is enough for managing items and using weapons. Character movements have an important role, while dealing with the boss. For example to avoid a direct attack and preserve health. Hopefully, enough amount of first aid keeps you alive. For PC, the keys are again easy to manage. It does not have hard combinations at all. Once you are done setting up controls, it goes linearly till the end.
Following first person's perspective, the games turn out to be much horror in between. Mutated creatures, pops out from any angle with a weird sound. If you are on headphones it will definitely give you a shock. It is necessary to understand the map very well. That's is the key to success. The entire mansion is huge with a lot of area in the yard and two more places revealed later in the game. If you know the map well, it is easier to avoid enemies or to reach the safe house.
You can run around, find doors without wandering blindly. At every new level, you can find the map somewhere that reveals the entire area with your location. That is one of the best things in the game. There are approx two safe points in an area, you can save your game, save items in the box to free up space in inventory and collect new stuff. This is helpful.
Also the game offer you chance to play multiple characters instead of only Ethan. Expect the boss fight, there are two or three types of mutated enemies in the game. So once you are a pro in killing them the game gets easier with time. I found the limited ammo's annoying.

Verdict:

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is a good start of 2017. Those who cannot tolerate gore can face issues, otherwise, this game is fantastic. Insane Baker family is challenging to deal with, they are tough and bad. On the other side, you will feel being dragged into something awful and the struggle of character to escape for a new life. The game continues its legendary virus outbreak protocol, but this time restricted just to a family with thrilling endings. Overall approx. 9 hours gameplay, if you are used to the mechanics, is enough to finish it or else you can go slow with regular breaks. It would be awesome to have a co-operative mode. For example what if Mia and Ethan can play together. It would be less scary to have a friend around. We did not get the chance to test this on PSVR, which is a thousand time scarier compared to PC. This year RE7 brings a first true horror PSVR experience.

Score: 9/10
