Look and Feel:
We are captivated by the way GX700 VO Is shipped in a ROG themed briefcase. Yet no other manufacturer had thought about it, Asus visions on gamers flexibility seems inspiration behind. The Hardware –
Intel Core i7 6820HK @ 2.7 GHz CPU owns boost frequency upto 3.6 GHz, some power for ultra game settings. Nvidia GTX 980 8GB GDDR5 VRAM is a titan mobile gpu backed by Nvidia GPU Boost. Both can be overclocked to gain higher power, relying on the cooling unit to keep them cool. Asus ROG application acts as the control center with pre-defined profiles, in-case your motive is performance not over clocking. The system do heats fast on Ultra settings, without Hydro cooling unit. It connects at back of laptop with heat pipes similar to closed-loop liquid cooler.
We are contented to see near to desktop like quality. But if you detach the cooling unit, the gpu struggles for output after a short time, because of restricted laptop battery power, is what we assume. 64GB DDR4- 2800Mhz RAM and two 500GB NVMe SSD bestow symmetric performance.
7 Previously we had reviewed ASUS ROG G20CB (IN018T) Gaming Desktop. Similar to ROG GX700 Laptop, the desktop is powered by high end configuration for gaming. It is a all in one gaming system. Benchmarking Reports:
Asus ROG GX700 VO showed us impressive results to justify its high end configuration. We ran a bunch of various benchmarking tests using different tools to really find its max capacity. To find the read/write speed we went first with a manual file transfer among partition that delivered a stable rate of 1.16GB/s of speed and CrystalDiskMark reported 3GB/s max capacity.
On CINEBENCH R15 we got an 867cb in the CPU-bound test and 139.56FPS in OpenGL graphics test.
To find out more about the gpu performance we used 3DMark and performed different tests. GX700 VO holds 8GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Graphic card. The first test below is Fire Strike Extreme, where the gpu scored 5820 with fps ranging between 32 to 22. The test runs on rendering resolution from 1920x1080 to 2560x1440. In the second one Fire Strike Ultra, GX700 VO scored 3125 with fps ranging between 17 to 10. This one benchmarks the 4K capacity of laptop.
The third one is Time Spy where it scored 4034 with fps ranging from 25 to 22. It’s a DirectX12 benchmark test on 2560x1440 resolution. And the last one Sky Diver gave us the highest of all scores. 25617 with fps between 160 to 159. The test is ideal for mid range gaming pc that benchmarks DirectX11 capability.
We got average 59 fps on Star Swarm test on 1920x1080 resolution. Our final conclusion after benchmarking of GX700 VO is based on mixed reports. We noticed that it performed really well on native 1K and 2K resolution, but when it comes to pushing it much higher on 4K, fps drops drastically. With liquid cooler attached the temperature lies between 30 to 50 degree Celsius and without cooler starts from 40 and keeps rising till 60 and above. Overall the cooling module reduces approx 30 to 35% of heat on gaming.
Gaming Performance –
Asus GX700 VO falls eminently on our prospect. Initially, we considered it one amid several, after following various tests, it turns out to be a factual performance monster. High ram, SSD, Good Amount of VRAM and a high-end CPU, overall contributes best for all games. For an entry and mid level gamer, GX700 VO is overmuch superior to estimate. For intense gamer expecting nothing less than 4K, will be unsatisfied with Asus ROG GX700 VO. It does assure high output, but keeping it stable on ultra-setting is challenging for desktop as well. Desktop gains over space to add extra gpu, performance is evenly distributed and managed by separate hardware. Laptop on contrary regardless to chipset, are confined to design. We won’t say that an extreme gamer will be elated, but a huge population of gamers favor good-to-go overclocking model with minimum efforts to fight with huge hardware list for assembled system will be fascinated with GX700 VO.
We rate it 9 out of 10 for gaming performance on low and high settings. But 6 out of 10 for 4K and Ultra settings.
Battery –
Asus GX700 VO runs on 6cell battery. The liquid cooling unit is not battery powered, it banks on direct power source and also acts as a charging dock. The battery performance relies on usage. Games at ultra-settings, 4K resolution with full volume can stretch it max to 4 hrs approx after full charge. It is lower if the CPU and gpu is overclocked for performance. The cooling system does not carry any supplementary power storage, which could be a great help. Assuming if you travel with the laptop, you cannot use the liquid cooling unless you have a direct power outlet. Talking about average usage like web browsing or multimedia, it does not fit in GX700 VO review.
We rate it 6 out of 10 for the battery and power requirement of cooling unit.
Final Words
Asus ROG GX700 VO is great for gaming. The hardware and design is near to perfect. The cost is high - yes, because it is a premium edition model. Such machines do not exist everywhere. Any gamer who consider quality and movability will love GX700 VO. At Gamepur, we are expecting more in the package. Atleast a complete gaming accessory like a gaming headphone, mechanical keyboard and gaming mouse is our minimum list. Otherwise it’s rare to find a dedicated cooling dock for laptop. Hydro Cooling Module becomes the USP of GX700 VO.
